Gyrodes was named by Conrad (1860) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti-u T Than Sepkoski's reference number: 4,157]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Lunatia (Gyrodes) by Gabb (1864); it was reranked as Natica (Gyrodes) by Dickerson (1914), Anderson (1958); it was misspelled as Girodes by Whitfield (1865), White (1889), Sohl (1964), Abbass (1967), Marincovich (1977), Gliozzi and Malatesta (1983), Kase (1984), Popenoe et al. (1987), Squires and Demetrion (1992), Dockery (1993), Sepkoski (2002), Kase and Ishikawa (2003), Matsubara et al. (2010).
