Pantosaurus was named by Marsh (1893) [Sepkoski's age data: J u].
It was assigned to Plesiosauridae by Hay (1902); to Plesiosauria by Williston (1903), Hay (1930), Sepkoski (2002), O'Keefe and Wahl (2003); to Cryptocleidoidea by Wilhelm and O'Keefe (2010); and to Cryptoclididae by Benson and Druckenmiller (2014).
