Taxonomy
Tursiops gillii was named by Dall (1873). It is extant. Its type specimen is USNM 13022, a mandible. Its type locality is Monterey, which is in a Holocene coastal horizon in California.
It was corrected as Tursiops gilli by Dall (1873), Hershkovitz (1966), Barnes (1977); it was recombined as Tursiops truncatus gillii by Rice (1998); it was synonymized subjectively with Tursiops truncatus by Jefferson (2021).
