Taxonomy
Histophorus rotundus was named by Monsch et al. (2005). Its type specimen is BMNH P8799, a skull, and it is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Xiphiorhynchus rotundus by Monsch et al. (2005), Fierstine (2006).
