Taxonomy
Saurodelphis gigas was named by Cozzuol (1988). Its type specimen is MER. AS. 817 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Parana, Pueblo Brugo to Diamante, Ituzaingo Fm., which is in a Huayquerian marine sandstone/mudstone in the Ituzaingo Formation of Argentina.
It was recombined as Saurocetes gigas by Cozzuol (1996), Cozzuol (2010), Geisler et al. (2012).
