It was recombined as Otaria leonina by Gray (1850), Gray (1866); it was recombined as Macrorhinus leonina by Gill (1866); it was recombined as Macrorhinus leoninus by Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904), Turner (1912), Friant (1947); it was synonymized subjectively with Otaria byronia by Allen (1902); it was recombined as Mirounga leonina by Thomas (1911), Scheffer and Rice (1963), Riedman (1990), Ling and Bryden (1992), Rice (1998), Koretsky (2001), Deméré et al. (2003), Werdelin and Peigne (2010), Cullen et al. (2014), Berta et al. (2018), Kienle and Berta (2019).
