Histriophoca alekseevi was named by Koretsky (2001) [IZUAN = I. I. Shmalhausen Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kiev]. Its type specimen is IZUAN 40-121, a partial skull (facial part of skull), and it is a 3D body fossil.
