Choeropsis was named by Leidy (1853). It is extant. Its type is Choeropsis liberiensis.
It was synonymized subjectively with Hexaprotodon by Coryndon (1977).
It was assigned to Hippopotamidae by Boisserie (2005); and to Hippopotaminae by Boisserie et al. (2005), Boisserie et al. (2010), Orliac et al. (2010), Weston and Boisserie (2010), Boisserie et al. (2011).
It was synonymized subjectively with Hexaprotodon by Coryndon (1977).
