Echidnidae was named by Burnett (1830). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Tachyglossidae by McKenna and Bell (1997).

It was assigned to Ornithostomi by Cope (1889); to Cacodonta by Ameghino (1889); and to Monotremata by Bonaparte (1850), Flower (1883), Flower and Lydekker (1891), Lydekker (1894).
