Platyceras equilatera was named by Hall (1859). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was corrected as Platyceras equilaterum by Keyes (1888); it was recombined as Capulus equilateralis by Keyes (1890); it was recombined as Capulus equilaterus by Keyes (1890); it was corrected as Platyceras equilateris by Hyde (1953); it was recombined as Platyceras (Orthonychia) equilaterum by Yochelson and Saunders (1967); it was recombined as Platyceras (Platyceras) equilateralis by Ausich (1978); it was corrected as Platyceras equilaterale by Batten (1984); it was recombined as Palaeocapulus equilateralis by Grabau and Shimer (1909), Wagner (2023).
