Taxonomy
Cetotherium brevifrons was named by Van Beneden (1872) [no type specimen listed by Van Beneden (1872)]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Anvers, which is in a Miocene/Pliocene marine horizon in Belgium.
It was recombined as Cetotherium (Plesiocetopsis) brevifrons by Brandt (1873); it was recombined as Cetotherium (Heterocetus) brevifrons by Newton (1891); it was recombined as Plesiocetus brevifrons by Van Deinse (1931); it was considered a nomen dubium by Steeman (2010); it was recombined as Heterocetus brevifrons by Vanden Broeck (1874), Van Beneden (1880), Roger (1887), Trouessart (1898), Abel (1901), Trouessart (1904), Kellogg (1931), Hampe and Ritsche (2011).
