Taxonomy
Scaldicetus shigensis was named by Hirota and Barnes (1995) [Shiga-mura Fossil Museum]. Its type specimen is SFM-00001, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Hofuku-ji River, which is in a Langhian marine horizon in the Bessho Formation of Japan. It was considered monophyletic by Kimura et al. (2006).
It was recombined as Naganocetus shigensis by Bianucci and Landini (2006); it was recombined as Brygmophyseter shigensis by Kimura et al. (2006), Kohno et al. (2007), Lambert et al. (2008), Velez-Juarbe et al. (2015).

Barnes 1995 | A species of Physeteridae in the genus Scaldicetus differing from all other Physeteridae by having the following combination of characters: a t least 11 teeth, and probably 12, in each dentary, and probably a similar number of functional upper teeth in each side of the palate, maxillae formed into crests along lateral margins anterior to antorbital notches, a very small right naris, orbits located anterior to end of zygomatic process of squamosal, temporal fossae large, occipital shield emarginated by temporal fossa, nuchal crest relatively low and broad; shaft of ulna expanded distally with posterior projection a t distal end. |
