Hadrodelphis poseidon was named by Ginsburg and Janvier (1971). Its type specimen is Fs 931, Museum, Paris, a tooth, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Pelmer, which is in a Langhian/Tortonian marine sandstone in France.
