Pocillopora was named by Lamarck (1816) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pocilloporidae by Veron and Pichon (1976) and López-Pérez (2005).
