Taxonomy
Balaena australis was named by Desmoulins (1822). It is extant. Its type specimen is MNHM unnumbered specimen, a skeleton. Its type locality is Cape of Good Hope, which is in a Holocene coastal horizon in South Africa.

It was synonymized subjectively with Balaena japonica by Van Beneden and Gervais (1868); it was recombined as Eubalaena glacialis australis by Hershkovitz (1966); it was recombined as Eubalaena australis by Gray (1864), Gray (1864), Flower (1865), Gray (1866), Gray (1868), Gray (1871), Scott (1873), Gondar (1966), Bergqvist et al. (1999), Bisconti (2003), Mead and Brownell (2005), Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008), Bisconti (2009), Churchill et al. (2012), Bisconti et al. (2017).
