Brontopodus birdi was named by Farlow et al. (1989). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is AMNH 3065 & TMM 40638-1, a footprint, and it is a trace fossil. Its type locality is TMM 40638, Paluxy River tracksite #A3 (Bird Site), which is in an Albian shallow subtidal wackestone/mudstone in the Glen Rose Limestone Formation of Texas. It is the type species of Brontopodus.
