Cephalotropis nectus

Taxonomy
Cephalotropis nectus was named by Kellogg (1940) [Museu Mineralogico e Geologica de Universidade de Lisboa]. Its type specimen is C3 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Adiça, which is in a Tortonian marine limestone/sandstone in Portugal.

It was synonymized subjectively with Cephalotropis coronatus by Mocho and Povons (2010), Marx and Fordyce (2015).

Figueiredo et al. 2024Shares with Cephalotropis coronatus the sigmoidal lateral edges of the supraoccipital, the expo- sure of the parietal in the skull vertex, elongated nasals, a rounded temporal fossa, protruding paroccipitals and a sub-triangular supraoccipital with a concave dorsal surface and a pointed apex. Differs from Cephalotropis coronatus in having a sharper external occipital crest, an irregular fronto-parietal suture, the maxilla separated by both nasals and premaxillae, the medial edges of the nasals forming a sagittal keel, the facial sulcus running along the posterior edge of the compound posterior process, a slightly conical compound posterior process, rounded tympanic bullae and also in lacking a squamosal cleft.
