Triaenopus was named by Hitchcock (1845). It is considered to be a form taxon.
It was assigned to Tetradactylidae by Hitchcock (1845); to Lacertilia by Hitchcock (1848); to Reptilia by Lull (1904), Lull (1917), Lull (1953); to Amphibia by Kuhn (1958); to Labyrinthodontia by Kuhn (1963); and to Saurischia by Haubold (1974).
