Isanosaurus was named by Buffetaut et al. (2000). Its type is Isanosaurus attavipachi.
It was assigned to Eusauropoda by Wilson (2002); to Sauropoda by Buffetaut et al. (2000), Upchurch et al. (2004), Moser et al. (2006); to Sauropoda by Thulborn (2006); to Gravisauria by Yates (2010); and to Sauropoda by Buffetaut et al. (2002), Smith and Pol (2007), Allain and Aquesbi (2008), Le Loeuff et al. (2009), Otero and Pol (2013).
