Struthiosaurus transylvanicus was named by Nopcsa (1915). Its type specimen is BMNH R4966, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Szentpéterfalva, Hateg Basin, which is in a Maastrichtian fluvial sandstone in the Sînpetru Formation of Romania. It was considered monophyletic by Vickaryous et al. (2004).

It was corrected as Struthiosaurus transsylvanicus by Nopcsa (1929); it was synonymized subjectively with Struthiosaurus austriacus by Pereda-Suberbiola and Galton (1992), Pereda-Suberbiola and Galton (1994); it was misspelled as Struthiosaurus transsylvanicus by Lapparent (1947), Mamulea (1953), Jeletzky (1960), Kuhn (1964), Simmons (1965), Charig (1967), Dinca et al.
