Goldfussastrea was named by Beauvais (1964) [Sepkoski's age data: J Toar-l J m Sepkoski's reference number: 682]. It is not extant. Its type is Goldfussastrea heidenheimensis.

It was assigned to Montlivaltiidae by Beauvais (1986); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
