Taxonomy
Delphinus commersonii was named by Lacépède (1804). It is extant. It is the type species of Cephalorhynchus.

It was recombined as Cephalorhynchus commersoni by Fraser and Purves (1960), Scheffer and Rice (1963), Hershkovitz (1966), Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008); it was recombined as Cephalorhynchus commersonii by Harmer (1922), Rice (1998), Mead and Brownell (2005), Perrin et al. (2013), Jefferson (2021).
