Taxonomy
Amphicetus later was named by Van Beneden (1880) [no type specimen listed in Van Beneden (1880); specimen number from Steeman (2007)]. Its type specimen is IRScNB CtM 575/Reg 313, a partial skull (right periotic), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Borsbeek, Fort 3, which is in a Tortonian lagoonal horizon in the Diest Formation of Belgium.
