Lophocetus calvertensis
Taxonomy
Delphinus calvertensis was named by Harlan (1842). Its type specimen is USNM 16314, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cove Point, which is in a Tortonian marine horizon in the St Marys Formation of Maryland.
It was recombined as Pontoporia calvertensis by Cope (1866); it was recombined as Lophocetus calvertensis by Cope (1867), Leidy (1869), Van Beneden and Gervais (1880), Roger (1887), Cope (1890), Trouessart (1898), Hay (1902), Trouessart (1904), Case (1904), Eastman (1907), Hay (1930), Kellogg (1955), Barnes (1985), Gottfried et al. (1994), Ichishima et al. (1995), Dawson (1996), Uhen et al. (2008), Peredo et al. (2018), Godfrey and Lambert (2023).
