Taxonomy
Delphinus rectifrons was named by Bravard (1858). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Barrancas del Rio Parana, which is in a Tortonian marginal marine siltstone/sandstone in the Entre Rios Formation of Argentina.

It was recombined as Delphinus (Pontistes) rectifrons by Burmeister (1885); it was recombined as Palaeopontoporia rectifrons by Ameghino (1891); it was recombined as Pontistes rectifrons by Ameghino (1889), Burmeister (1891), Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904), Cozzuol (1985), Cozzuol (2010).
