Taxonomy

Delphinapterinae was named by Gill (1871). It is extant. Its type is Delphinapterus. It was considered monophyletic by Barnes (1984).

It was assigned to Delphinidae by Gill (1871), Gill (1872), Hay (1902), Trouessart (1904), True (1908), Miller (1923), Hay (1930); to Delphinapteridae by Kasuya (1973); and to Monodontidae by Ellerman and Morrisson-Scott (1951), Barnes (1984), Barnes et al. (1985), Vidal (1991), Fordyce and Barnes (1994), Fordyce et al. (1995), McKenna and Bell (1997), Fordyce and de Muizon (2001), Bianucci and Landini (2007), Foekens (2008), Whitmore and Kaltenbach (2008).

Synonyms

Beluginae was named by Flower (1867).

It was reranked as the family Belugidae by Gray (1868), Gray (1870), Gray (1871), Scott (1873); it was synonymized subjectively with Delphinapterinae by McKenna and Bell (1997).

It was assigned to Delphinidae by Flower (1867); to Delphinoidea by Gray (1868), Gray (1870); to Delphinoidea by Gray (1871); to Odontocete by Scott (1873); and to Acrodelphidae by Abel (1905), Zittel (1925).
Delphinapteridae was named by Scott (1873). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Delphinapterinae by McKenna and Bell (1997).

It was assigned to Odontocete by Scott (1873); to Odontoceti by Weber (1904), Weber (1928); to Odontoceti by Slijper (1936); and to Delphinoidea by Kasuya (1973).
