Dicrocynodon was named by Marsh. Its type is Diplocynodon victor. It is the type genus of Dicrocynodontidae.
It was synonymized subjectively with Docodon by Simpson (1929), Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004).
It was assigned to Amphitheriidae by Hay (1902); and to Dicrocynodontidae by Simpson (1927), Hay (1930).
