Taxonomy
Ornithomimus velox was named by Marsh (1890). Its type specimen is YPM 542, a set of limb elements, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Beaver Creek Valley (YPM), which is in a Maastrichtian terrestrial horizon in the Denver Formation of Colorado.

Loewen 2016Ornithomimid with the following autapomorphies: relatively short and robust metatarsus, with maximum relative width of metatarsal (MT) III exceeding that of any known ornithomimid. Ratio of maximum MT III diaphysis anteroposterior width divided by length of MT III is 11%. Relatively short metatarsus in comparison with hand. Metacarpal (MC) I and MC II are apposed for a relatively short distance, along the first quarter of their total length. A shared synapomorphy for the genus is the length of MC I being greater than that of MC II, and MC II being greater than MC III (MC I > MC II > MC III).
