Gyposaurus was named by Broom (1911). Its type is Gyposaurus capensis.
It was synonymized subjectively with Anchisaurus by Galton and Cluver (1976), Dong (1997); it was synonymized subjectively with Massospondylus by Cooper (1981); it was synonymized subjectively with Lufengosaurus by Evans and Milner (1989); it was considered a nomen dubium by Galton and Upchurch (2004).
