Lithopera was named by Ehrenberg (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 686]. It is extant. Its type is Lithopera bacca.

It was assigned to Eucyrtidiidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Nassellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
