Atlasaurus was named by Monbaron et al. (1999). Its type is Atlasaurus imelakei.
It was assigned to Brachiosauridae by Upchurch and Martin (2003); to Titanosauriformes by Apesteguía (2005); to Camarasauromorpha by Moser et al. (2006); to Turiasauria by Xing et al. (2015); to Eusauropoda by Monbaron et al. (1999), Wilson (2002), Allain et al. (2004), Royo-Torres et al. (2006), D'Emic (2012), Mannion et al. (2013), Mannion et al. (2017), Ibrahim et al. (2017); and to Macronaria by Upchurch et al. (2004), Taquet (2010), Mannion et al. (2019).
