Prototomus strenuus was named by Cope (1875).

It was recombined as Stypolophus strenuus by Cope (1877), Cope (1880), Cope (1881), Hay (1902); it was recombined as Sinopa strenuus by Scott (1892); it was recombined as Sinopa strenua by Matthew (1899), Matthew (1901), Matthew and Granger (1915), White (1952); it was recombined as Tritemnodon strenuus by Van Valen (1965), Guthrie (1967), Guthrie (1971), Stucky (1984), Kihm (1984), Gingerich and Deutsch (1989), Gunnell (1998).
