Dromocyon vorax was named by Marsh (1876) [genotype]. It is the type species of Dromocyon.
It was recombined as Mesonyx vorax by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Synoplotherium vorax by Matthew (1909), Gazin (1976), O'Leary and Rose (1995), Rose and O'Leary (1995).
