Taxonomy
Clavatula californica was named by Conrad (1855).

It was recombined as Fusus californicus by Gabb (1864) and Gabb (1864); it was recombined as Clavilithes californicus by Anderson and Hanna (1925); it was replaced with Ranellina pilsbryi by Stewart (1927).
