Actaeon merriami was named by Waring (1917). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Southwest of Santa Susana, which is in a Danian transition zone/lower shoreface sandstone in the Las Virgenes Formation of California.
It was recombined as Acteon merriami by Nelson (1925).
