Sus tajacu was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Tayassu tajacu by Hay (1902), Thomas (1911), Wetzel (1977), Gasparini (2013); it was recombined as Dicotyles tajacu by Woodburne (1968), Woodburne (1969), Wright (1989), Wright (1993); it was recombined as Pecari tajacu by Miller (1912), Wilson and Reeder (1993), Theimer and Keim (1998), Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008), Dutra et al. (2017).
