Paradoxodon was named by Scott (1892) [preoccupied by an Indian shrew]. Its type is Chriacus ruetimeyerianus.
It was synonymized subjectively with Suncus by Van Valen (1967); it was synonymized subjectively with Loxolophus by Van Valen (1978); it was synonymized subjectively with Paradoxodonides by McKenna and Bell (1997).
It was assigned to Uintacyonidae by Hay (1902); and to Oxyclaenidae by Hay (1930).
