---|---|---|
Y. Tanaka and R. Nakagawa 2024 | MPM-Fo1058 belongs to a clade of the Squalodelphinidae þ Platanistidae by having a narrow, fan-shaped restricted area between the postorbital ridge of the frontal and subtemporal crest (ch. 145), a deep sub-circular fossa of the squamosal (sensu de Muizon 1987) (ch. 153), and a funnel-like posterior part of the epitympanic hiatus of the periotic (chs 286) (see Discussion). MPM-Fo1058 belongs to the Squalodelphinidae (a clade with Squalodelphis fabianii) by having a large aperture for the cochlear aqueduct with a thin edge of the periotic (chs 188, 193), a deep, V-shaped left antorbital notch with an anteriorly pointed left antorbital process (chs 10, 36), and a squared pars cochlearis of the periotic (Bianucci et al., 2020). Miodelphinus miensis differs from other squalodelphinids and platanistids by having an almost straight ventral edge of the zygomatic process (ch. 116), a weak edge posterodorsal to the stapedial muscle fossa on the periotic (ch. 185), and a large posteriorly widened funnel-like articular depression that opens ventrally. |
