Orthocynodon was named by Scott and Osborn (1882).
It was synonymized subjectively with Amynodon by Scott and Osborn (1887), Osborn (1890), Hay (1902), Troxell (1921), Wood (1938), Wilson and Schiebout (1981), Wall (1982), Prothero and Schoch (1989), Wall (1989).
It was assigned to Rhinocerotoidea by Scott and Osborn (1882); and to Amynodontidae by Scott and Osborn (1883).
