Merycodus was named by Leidy (1854). Its type is Merycodus necatus.
It was synonymized subjectively with Dicrocerus by Cope (1877); it was considered a nomen dubium by Frick (1937).
It was assigned to Cervidae by Leidy (1873); to Cervulinae by Hay (1902); to Merycodontidae by Matthew (1904); and to Antilocapridae by Leidy (1854), Cook (1934), Skinner and Taylor (1967), Carroll (1988), Janis and Manning (1998).
