Taxonomy
Pliauchenia merriami was named by Frick (1921). Its type locality is Mount Eden, which is in a Hemphillian terrestrial horizon in the Mt. Eden Formation of California. It is the type species of Megacamelus.
It was recombined as Titanotylopus merriami by Webb (1965); it was recombined as Megacamelus merriami by Harrison (1985), Honey et al. (1998).
