Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
S. J. Godfrey and O. Lambert 2023Small delphinidan diagnosed by the following unique combination of characters: low cranial vertex; skull only slightly asymmetrical; maxillae and presphenoid form anterior margins of bony nares; posterolateral margin of premaxillae with lateral tuberosity, medial to which there is contact with nasals; dorsomedialmost margin of maxillae immediately adjacent to vertex overhangs lower more medially placed portion of maxillae that appears to “squeeze” the vertex bilaterally from below; in dorsal view, posterior margin of combined nasals approximates the shape of the letter W; lat- eral part of each nasal inflated; deep internasal basin on vertex, extending posteriorly on anterior portion of frontals on vertex; frontals wedge forward between nasals on vertex; deep fossa for preorbital lobe of pterygoid sinus nearly contacting the fossa for the postorbital lobe, dorsal to the frontal groove; premaxillary and anterior dorsal infraorbital foramina located in the area of the antorbital notch; antorbital maxillary tuberosity/ridge pres- ent (“dorsal swelling of maxilla” in Figure 2.57B); relatively elongate rostrum, narrow for its anterior half; rostrum length 282 mm (antorbital notch to anterior extremity); 37 alveoli in left maxilla, possibly as many as 40 in right maxilla; 2 (possibly 3) alveoli per premaxilla; enamel crown of teeth conical and recurved; height of enamel crown to 6 mm; enamel base of crown to 3 mm in diameter; crown exhibits mesial and distal carinae (sometimes but rarely only weakly developed); distal carina often drawn out into accessory cusps, usually 2–4 along carina.
