Chubutinectes carmeloi

Taxonomy
Chubutinectes carmeloi was named by O'Gorman et al. (2023). Its type specimen is MPEF-PV 5232, a set of postcrania, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Puesto Los Colorados, which is in a Maastrichtian marine sandstone in the La Colonia Formation of Argentina. It is the type species of Chubutinectes.

O'Gorman et al. 2023Elasmosaurid characterised by the following combination of features: middle cervical centra longer than high with lateral keel and bilobate articular faces; at least twenty-two dorsal vertebrae; approximately (24) caudal centra; posterior cervical, pectoral and anterior dorsal centra with bilobate articular faces; coracoids with closed cordiform fenestra and long anterior coracoid process; high ratio coracoids/scapular length; ilium with angled shaft; pubis with small lateral cornua; humerus with posterior expansion ending in accessory facet; epipodial facets of humerus almost aligned; epipodial elements wider than long; epipodial foramen
short and elliptical; accessory ossification between tibia and tibial and radius and radial.
