Leptauchenia calcarata was named by Cope (1873). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Hypertragulus calcaratus by Cope (1874), Cope (1879), Cope (1884), Hay (1902), Lull (1922), Frick (1937), Scott (1940), Galbreath (1953), Vislobokova (2001), Lofgren et al. (2020).
