Olympicetus thalassodon was named by Velez-Juarbe (2023) [partial skull with articulated mandibles, including 18 teeth, periotics and tympanic bullae, cervical vertebrae 1–6, and hyoids; missing distal end of rostrum/mandible.]. Its type specimen is LACM 158720, a partial skeleton (partial skull with articulated mandibles, including 18 teeth, periotics and tympanic bullae, cervical vertebrae 1–6, and hyoids; missing distal end of rostrum/m), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Murdock Creek, which is in a Rupelian/Chattian marine horizon in Washington.
