Leptomeryx defordi was named by Wilson (1974). Its type locality is Big Red Horizon (Main Fossil Level), which is in a Duchesnean terrestrial horizon in the Chambers Tuff Formation of Texas.
It was recombined as Hendryomeryx defordi by Black (1978), Wilson and Stevens (1986), Prothero (1996), Heaton and Emry (1996), Vislobokova (2001).
