Dissacus leptognathus was named by Osborn and Wortman (1892).

It was recombined as Hapalodectes leptognathus by Matthew (1909), Matthew and Granger (1915), Hay (1930), Szalay (1969), Zhou et al. (1995), Solé et al. (2017), Solé et al. (2018).
