Taxonomy
Hapalodectes compressus was named by Matthew (1909). Its type specimen is AMNH 12781, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was synonymized subjectively with Hapalodectes leptognathus by Szalay and Gould (1966), Guthrie (1967), Szalay (1969).
