Taxonomy
Gaillardia thomsoni was named by Matthew (1932) [genotype]. Its type specimen is AMNH 20508, a mandible (a lower jaw, left ramus complete, with p3- 4, m3 and alveoli of remaining teeth), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is ZX Bar, which is in a Hemphillian terrestrial horizon in the Snake Creek Formation of Nebraska. It is the type species of Gaillardia.
