Taxonomy
Dicotyles was named by Cuvier (1817) [genotype Dicotyles labiatus Cuvier, a synonym of Tayassu pecari]. It is extant.
It was reranked as Perchoerus (Dicotyles) by Marsh (1893); it was synonymized subjectively with Tayassu by Palmer (1897), Hay (1902), Miller (1912), Wilson and Reeder (1993).
It was assigned to Suina by Gray (1825); to Artiodactyla by Owen (1848); to Pachydermata by Leidy (1860); to Suidae by Leidy (1873); to Perchoerus by Marsh (1893); and to Tayassuinae by Wright (1998).
